Grand Mesa National Forest and Gunnison National Forest converge on this high-elevation landscape, where the border of Mesa and Delta Counties follows the divide. The terrain is defined by a dense network of high-altitude water storage, including the Overland Reservoir and Monument Reservoir Number 1. This water infrastructure is connected by the extensive Overland Ditch, which traverses the eastern slopes of Chalk Mountain.
