Day Lake sits at the heart of this high-elevation landscape within the Mount Baker National Forest. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent summits including Iron Mtn, Coal Mtn, and the neighboring Little Deer Peak and Big Deer Peak. This environment is characterized by a dense network of drainages such as Cumberland Cr, O'Toole Cr, and Little Deer Cr that carve through the steep topography. Navigation through this wilderness in 2017 is largely dictated by forest infrastructure, notably Natl Forest Develop 17 Rd and Rocky Creek Rd. The drainage patterns, particularly around Day Creek and Phinney Cr, reveal the intricate hydrology of the Skagit County highlands.
