The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge dominates this section of the Oregon high desert, where the complex hydrology of the Blitzen Valley is revealed through an intricate network of waterways. The Donner und Blitzen River flows through the western edge of the quadrangle, supported by man-made infrastructure like the Skunk Farm Canal and Center Canal. This managed wetland environment contrasts sharply with the volcanic geology to the east, notably the Diamond Craters and the towering Jackass Mtn.
