About this map

The 651st Engineer Topographic Battalion produced this wartime survey for the California-Arizona Maneuver Area, documenting the stark high-desert landscape during World War II. The terrain is dominated by the Piute Mountains, which rise sharply above the Lanfair Valley to the north. Central to the area's layout is the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad line, which dictates the placement of essential water resources and small railway stops. The vital importance of the railroad in this arid environment is evidenced by the presence of a reservoir at both Fenner and Piute, serving as critical supply points. Near the southern edge of the quadrangle, Fenner Springs provides a rare natural water source amidst the rugged topography, while the small settlement of Goffs serves as a junction for travel toward Cadiz.
