About this map

The Continental Divide winds through the high terrain of the Gila National Forest in this early 1990s snapshot of Grant County history. The landscape transitions from the northern mountain peaks, such as Pinos Altos Mountain and Avalanche Peak, down into the growing mining and medical hubs of the south. The historic Pinos Altos settlement sits near the northern boundary, while the southern half of the map is anchored by the Fort Bayard Military Reservation, home to the Fort Bayard State Medical Center and the Fort Bayard National Cemetery.
