The Skagit River dominates the southern reaches of this landscape, carving through the Skagit Valley where the settlements of Hamilton and Birdsview established themselves along the rail and river corridors. This 2014 survey documents the complex interface between these valley floor communities and the rising terrain of the Mount Baker National Forest to the north. Elevated landmarks like Mt Josephine and its namesake Mount Josephine Lookout provide clear points of orientation above the drainage basins of Alder Cr and Muddy Cr.
