Situated at the junction of the Chicago and Northwestern and Ishpeming rail lines, the community grew around the shores of Little Lake. The surrounding landscape is characterized by a dense network of water bodies, including Echo Lake, Engman Lake, and the uniquely named Morbid Lake.

Lumbering or recreational interests are evident through several named camps such as La Bresh Camp, Carlsons Camp, and Johnsons Camp scattered throughout the territory. Evidence of early rural infrastructure remains visible in the presence of the Racine Sch and the West Br Cem along the West Br Chocolay branch.
