Skagit Valley landforms dominate the northern portion of this 1980s landscape, where the Day Creek settlement sits at the base of the high timberlands. The terrain transitions rapidly from the valley floor into the steep elevations of the Cultus Mountains, a region marked by extensive extractive activity. Resource extraction is evident through numerous quarries and a Gravel Pit scattered among the peaks of Haystack Mtn and Talc Mountain.

High-altitude water bodies such as Dixie Lake, RB Lake, and Wagner Lake are tucked into the mountain folds, feeding a network of drainages including the Nookachamps River East Fork and Sorenson Creek. This survey captures the region as it functioned in the mid-1980s, primarily as a managed forest and mineral landscape accessed by 4wd tracks and forest roads winding around landmarks like Split Rock and Table Mountain.
