Death Valley National Park encompasses the majority of this desert terrain, where the steep slopes of the Panamint Range dominate the eastern half of the landscape. The dramatic elevation changes are defined by a series of deep incisions, notably Wildrose Canyon in the north and the namesake Jail Canyon further south. These drainages emphasize the transition from the high ridges down toward the arid flats of the Mojave Desert to the west.
