Agricultural life in the San Luis Valley is defined by a dense grid of irrigation infrastructure, where the Alamosa River and La Jara Creek are channeled into numerous waterworks. Large-scale engineering is evident in the Empire Canal and the San Luis Ditch, which redirect water across the high desert plain to support the clustered settlements of La Jara and Sanford. These towns, along with the smaller communities of Richfield and Estrella, are linked by a precise network of county roads that follow the section lines of the Public Land Survey System.
