About this map

Mount Washington and the towering peaks of the Presidential Range anchor the southwestern portion of this regional survey, which transitions from the high elevations of the White Mountain National Forest to the industrial hubs along the Androscoggin River. By the early 1960s, the twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn had established themselves as primary population centers in Androscoggin County, supported by a dense network of transportation including the Grand Trunk RR and Maine Central RR.
