Little Lake serves as a central hub in this Marquette County landscape, where the Soo Line corridor meets a network of local roads and snowmobile trails. The settlement of Swanzy and the residential reaches of K. I. Sawyer characterize the western portion of the map, while the east transitions into a denser concentration of wetlands and water bodies, including Gravels Pond and MacGregor Lake.

The area's complex hydrology is defined by the W Br Chocolay River and its various cataracts, such as Froling Falls and Upper Chocolay Falls. To the south, the terrain softens into the expansive Gyr Swamp, a significant wetland feature that contrasts with the earlier development seen around the town sites. Researchers can trace the proximity of historical community infrastructure, notably the West Branch Cem located near the northern edge of the survey area.
