Mt Wilson and the Black Mountains dominate this high-desert landscape in Mohave County, where the stark topography of the Mojave Desert meets the eastern reaches of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The terrain is characterized by a series of prominent ridges and peaks, including Wilson Ridge and Black Butte, which divide the high country from the broad expanse of the Detrital Valley. Hydrological patterns are defined by the ephemeral Detrital Wash, which drains through the valley floor toward the Colorado River system. Human passage through this arid environment is limited to significant corridors such as Temple Bar Rd and Co Hwy 143, which provide access through the complex network of canyons and alluvial fans that define this corner of Arizona.
