The high desert hydrology of the San Luis Valley is captured in this 2010 survey of Saguache County. San Luis Creek and its many tributaries, including Crestone Creek, Willow Creek, and Cottonwood Creek, dominate the landscape, flowing toward the valley floor from the east. The human imprint on this arid environment is most visible through an extensive network of irrigation infrastructure. Diversion projects such as the Wales Travis Ditch, Frazee Ditch, and several segments of the North Crestone Ditch and South Crestone Ditch illustrate the complex water management required for agriculture and ranching in this region.
