The Pinos Altos Range dominates this portion of the Gila National Forest, where the complex drainage systems of Allie Canyon and Bear Canyon descend toward the Mimbres River valley. This 1990s survey captures a landscape of managed wilderness and ranching history, centered around the Gila Wilderness Ranger Station and the established GOS Ranch near the confluence of Sapillo Creek. The presence of several named water sources, including Soldier Spring, Grave Spring, and Little Bear Spring, indicates the critical importance of water management in this arid environment for both livestock and forest service operations.
