El Malpais National Monument and the Cibola National Forest meet in this section of New Mexico, where ancient travel routes and modern roads intersect. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail winds through the landscape, crossing paths with the historical Zuni-Acoma Trail near the settlement of Encerrito. The terrain is defined by the volcanic features of the Zuni-Bandera volcanic field, including the prominent Cerritos de Jaspe and the deep drainage of Bonita Canyon.
