About this map

Wallace and the silver-mining district of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains dominate the northern landscape of this early 20th-century survey. The region's industrial vitality is evident in the dense concentration of claims such as the Alice Mine, Snowstorm Mine, and Bullion Mine. To the south, the terrain transitions into the rugged wilderness of the Coeur d'Alene National Forest, where the St Joe River carves through the Bitterroot Range. Transport infrastructure is a defining feature, with the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul Railway traversing high mountain passes through the East Portal. This network supported remote settlements like Roland, Falcon, and Adair. Long-established routes including the Old Montana Trail and St Joe Trail suggest the earlier paths used by prospectors and trappers before the arrival of heavy rail. Occasional isolated landmarks like Haunted Cabin and several Ranger Stations reflect the sparse, work-oriented habitation of the high country.
