Saguaro National Park dominates the eastern and southern portions of this landscape, encompassing the high desert peaks and canyons of the Tucson Mountains. The elevation rises sharply from the valley floor to summits like Wasson Peak and Safford Peak, while the western flats are defined by the Avra Valley and the massive infrastructure of the Central Arizona Project Aqueduct. Residential development is concentrated near the settlement of Marana in the northeast and Picture Rocks further south.
