The Appalachian National Scenic Trail traverses a series of prominent peaks in this portion of Piscataquis County, following the high ridgeline from Barren Mtn through Fourth Mtn, Third Mtn, and onward toward Columbus Mtn. This landscape is defined by its dramatic vertical relief and complex hydrology, where numerous water features such as Screw Auger Falls, Billings Falls, and Buttermilk Falls mark the descent of the West Branch Pleasant River.
