The high desert landscape along the border of Deschutes Co and Lake Co is defined by volcanic features and vital water sources. This area of central Oregon is characterized by a series of prominent buttes, including Yreka Butte in the north and East Butte and Harder Butte to the south. These landmarks rise above flat expanses like Mahogany Flat and Trail Flat, where the scarcity of water is evidenced by the strategic placement of naming for small catchments such as Mahogany Waterhole, Great Basin Waterhole, and Hill Top Waterhole. The central feature of the region is the ephemeral Benjamin Lake, which sits below the overlook of Benjamin Point. The terrain is marked by dramatic relief in places like Elvies Canyon and Wells Draw, showing the drainage patterns through this arid basin.
