The San Andres Mountains dominate the eastern half of this terrain, where the high peaks of Big Gyp Mtn and the pass at Big Gap overlook the desert landscape. This 2013 survey of Sierra County captures a series of canyons and critical water sources essential to life in the high desert, including Upper Rosebud Spring, Smith Springs, and Gyp Spring. To the west, the land flattens into the Jornada del Muerto, a historic and challenging stretch of the desert. The presence of livestock water infrastructure like Buckhorn Tank and East Tank indicates the continued utility of this arid land for ranching. Navigational markers like Fuller Rd and WSMR P Route 16 provide the primary access points through the complex system of ridges and washes such as Soldier Hole Canyon.
