Big Shanty Mountain and the surrounding wilderness of Piscataquis County are defined by a network of remote water bodies and prominent peaks in the early 21st century. The landscape is dominated by the massive presence of White Cap Mountain to the west and the expansive waters of B Pond in the east. Numerous small alpine lakes, such as Mountain View Pond and Round Pond, are tucked between the high ridges of Big Boardman Mountain and Little Boardman Mountain. The drainage patterns are clearly visible, with the East Branch Pleasant River cutting through the northwestern sector while various feeders like Shanty Mountain Brook and Big White Brook flow south toward the Saddleback Mountain foothills. This 2011 survey documents a preserved backcountry area characterized by significant elevation changes and pristine hydrological features.
