About this map

Big Shanty Mtn and a cluster of surrounding peaks dominate this high-elevation landscape in Piscataquis County. The Appalachian National Scenic Trl traverses the northern section of the map, crossing beneath Big Boardman Mtn and passing Mountain View Pond before continuing toward Little Boardman Mtn. This area is characterized by its network of water bodies and high summits, including White Cap Mtn and Big Spruce Mtn. While the terrain is steep and complex, access is provided by primitive routes such as Logan Brook Rd and Spruce Brook Rd, which follow the natural drainages of Logan Brook and Spruce Mountain Brook. The presence of numerous high-altitude ponds, including Murphy Pond and Greenwood Pond, highlights the glacial legacy of this part of the Maine interior.
