About this map

Buckfield and the surrounding Oxford County hill country appear here as a network of small agricultural and milling settlements linked by the Maine Central railroad and the Nezinscot River. The landscape is defined by its numerous small schoolhouses, such as Highland Sch, Tyler Sch, and Whittemore Sch, which served the dispersed rural population at the time of this 1940s survey. The Androscoggin River carves through the northern portion of the quadrangle, fueling industry at Canton and Gilbertville. Of particular interest to local historians is the placement of Mt Oxford Spring and the concentrated village structure at Brettuns Mills and East Sumner. From the high elevations of Black Mountain to the waters of Lake Anasagunticook, the map details a region transitioning into the mid-20th century while retaining its 19th-century settlement patterns.
