The Buffalo River carves through the heart of this Virginia landscape, winding past the heights of Buffalo Ridge as it flows toward its confluence with the Tye River. The southern boundary is defined by a large bend in the James River, where Christian Island and Wreck Island sit near the historic river crossing at Walkers Ford. This topography is shaped by the transition from the rolling Piedmont hills toward the more prominent elevations of Larkin Mtn and Dyestone Ridge.
