The Fort Apache Indian Reservation landscape is defined by the deep incisions of Carrizo Creek and its tributaries as they cut through the plateau of Gila County. In the late 1970s, the small settlement of Carrizo and the Flying V Maintenance Yard serve as the primary human outposts in a territory otherwise dominated by livestock infrastructure and water management. Numerous family-named and descriptive stock tanks, such as Butterball Tank, John Moore Tank, and Mud Cat Tank, are scattered across the mesas to support ranching operations in this arid environment.
