Chaco Canyon National Monument anchors the southwest corner of this northwestern New Mexico landscape, preserving a concentration of ancient habitation sites along Gallo Wash and the Chaco River. The 1970s era represented here is defined by a remote network of outposts, including Huerfano Trading Post, Blanco Trading Post, and Tsah Tah Trading Post, which served as critical economic hubs for local communities. The terrain is marked by significant topographical boundaries, with the Continental Divide cutting across the southeast while the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation occupies much of the eastern half of the quadrangle.
