Charles sits at the southern edge of this Mackinac County landscape, where the inland forests meet the expansive waters of Saint Martin Bay. This coastal region is defined by a dense network of waterways draining into Lake Huron, including the winding Carp River and Pine River. Much of the terrain is protected as part of the Hiawatha National Forest, illustrating a mid-20th-century balance between managed timberlands and the preservation of Upper Peninsula wilderness.
