Stanislaus National Forest and the western edge of Yosemite National Park converge in this high-altitude landscape dominated by the deep incisions of the Cherry Creek Canyon. The massive reservoir of Cherry Lake anchors the southern portion of the sheet, where several off-highway vehicle routes like the Cherry Lake No OHV-ATV and Hull Creek OHV ATV provide access to the backcountry.

A network of mountain meadows, including Bourland Meadow, Bear Meadow, and Clavey Meadow, indicates the alpine character of the terrain. Notable hydrologic features such as Jawbone Falls and Bourland Chain Lakes are reached via an extensive system of Forest Service roads. To the east, the Huckleberry Trail skirts Kibbie Ridge, marking the transition into the protected wilderness of the national park, while prominent heights like Hells Mountain and Bourland Mtn define the local skyline.
