The Coteau des Prairies plateau defines this landscape in eastern South Dakota, where glacial geography shaped the drainage patterns of the high plains. In the early twenty-first century, this region across the Grant County and Deuel County line remains characterized by its prairie water systems, including the headwaters of Mud Cr and Lost Cr. The topography reveals the subtle elevation changes of the massive flatiron-shaped plateau, a feature significant to the geologic history of the upper Midwest. In the southern portion of the quadrangle, Lone Tree Lake sits near the drainage of Crow Timber Cr, surrounded by a regular grid of section roads such as 172nd St and 170th St that reflect the enduring impact of the Public Land Survey System on the rural landscape.
