The expansive Gull Lake anchors the southern portion of this landscape, flanked by lakeside communities like Highland Park, Midland Park, and Island Park. In the late 1940s, this region of Michigan was defined by its transition between organized township blocks and complex glacial hydrology. The Barry and Kalamazoo county border follows the Base Line, separating the northern glacial pits and lakes of Prairieville from the more developed southern lands of Richland and Ross.
