Craters of the Moon National Monument dominates the western portion of this Idaho landscape, where the jagged edges of expansive lava fields meet the sagebrush steppe. This boundary between volcanic flows and high desert terrain is punctuated by isolated topographic rises, most notably Saddle Butte and Wildhorse Butte in the north. The eastern half of the survey area transitions into more open ground, where the Arco-Minidoka Rd provides the primary route through the desert. Near the eastern margin, Fingers Butte and its namesake Fingers Butte Reservoir offer a rare water source in this arid environment. Other distinct landmarks like Cruthers Butte and the curious depression of Huddles Hole further define the intricate surface of the Snake River Plain.
