Fort Garland and the neighboring settlement of Blanca occupy this stretch of the San Luis Valley, where an extensive network of irrigation infrastructure manages the runoff from the nearby peaks. The landscape is defined by the complex water engineering of the Sangre de Cristo Ditch Number 3, Newton Ditch, and the Feedline Canal, which feed into the Mountain Home Reservoir. These waterways support the agricultural valley floor, contrasting with the higher terrain where Cottonwood Cr and Sangre de Cristo Cr descend from the mountains.

Local history is preserved in several burial sites scattered across the township, including the Fort Garland Cem, Brennaman Cem, Mac Mullan Cem, and Myer Cem.
