Joshua Tree National Park encompasses a significant portion of this arid landscape, where the high desert terrain transitions between several prominent landforms. The Pinto Mountains rise to the north and the Hexie Mountains to the south, framing the expansive Pinto Basin. This low-lying desert floor is a drainage focal point for seasonal watercourses including the namesake Fried Liver Wash, as well as Pinto Wash and Washington Wash.
