Joshua Tree National Park encompasses the majority of this desert landscape, where the transition between the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert is marked by distinct topographical basins. The northern reach is dominated by the Pinto Mountains and the elevation drop into Music Valley, while the southern portion of the sheet is defined by the Hexie Mountains. Drainage patterns are critical in this arid environment, evidenced by the convergence of Pinto Wash and Fried Liver Wash as they flow toward the Pinto Basin.
