About this map

Gallup serves as the industrial and transportation hub of this high-desert landscape, situated where the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad parallels Highway 66. The regional economy is clearly defined by resource extraction, evident in the cluster of workings north of the city such as the Gibson Coal Mine, Navajo Coal Mine, and Carbon City Mine. This 1962 edition illustrates the complex overlapping jurisdictions of the Southwest, spanning the Navajo Indian Reservation and Zuni Indian Reservation alongside the Cibola National Forest. To the west, the Defiance Plateau rises toward Window Rock, while the southern reaches contain the high peaks of the Zuni Mountains, including Mount Sedgwick and Mount Powell Lookout. Numerous remote outposts and trading hubs like Klagetoh and Todilto Park dot the terrain, linked by a network of unimproved roads and desert washes.
