The eastern banks of the Connecticut River define this part of the Capitol Planning Region, where the suburban development of Glastonbury meets the high, wooded ridges of Meshoumasic Mtn and Minnechaug Mtn. The landscape is a mix of established residential villages like Welles Village and Forbes Village in the north and more dispersed settlements such as Taylor Town and Belltown further south.

Several historic burial grounds are scattered throughout the area, including the Wassuc Cem, Old Buckingham Cem, and Saint Augustine Cem, providing valuable touchpoints for local genealogists. Industrial and natural history converge at Cotton Hollow and along the various brooks, such as Roaring Brook and Salmon Brook, which descend from the hills toward the river plains. The presence of Shoddy Mill Pond and Cold Brook Reservoir reflects the managed water resources used by the communities of East Glastonbury and South Glastonbury during their long development.
