About this map

The Tuckasegee River winds through the northern portion of this landscape, anchoring the settlement of Dillsboro near the junction of multiple county lines. The terrain is defined by the high ridges of the Alarka Mountains and the Cowee Mountains, where steep drainages like Connelly Cr and Barkers Creek have shaped local settlement patterns for generations. Much of the central and western area is protected within the Nantahala National Forest, preserving a complex network of gaps and knobs such as Wesser Gap and Cowee Bald.
