Yosemite National Park contains the dramatic geography of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River, where the waters of the Tuolumne Wild and Scenic River flow through the Sierra Nevada. Central to this landscape is the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which occupies the former floor of the Hetch Hetchy Valley, a point of significant environmental and engineering history. The surrounding high country is marked by numerous seasonal drainages like Tiltill Cr and Rancheria Cr, the latter of which features the Rancheria Falls.

Away from the reservoir, the terrain rises toward Rancheria Mtn and Mt Gibson. Long-standing backcountry routes, such as the Old Tioga Road Trl and the Smith Peak Trl, provide access to the high meadows and peaks.
