Houghton and the surrounding highlands of the Rangeley region are dominated by the winding path of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, which traverses the high ridges of Bemis Mtn and Old Blue Mtn. The landscape is defined by the headwaters of the Swift River and its various tributaries like the W Br Swift River, which cut through the steep elevations between Brimstone Mtn and Spruce Mtn.

Settlement is sparse, centered primarily on the small hubs of Bemis on the eastern shore of Mooselookmeguntic Lake and the inland locality of Ten Degree. These points are connected by historic routes such as Bemis Rd and Main Rd. High-altitude water bodies, including Sabbath Day Pond, Long Pond, and Spencer Pond, are scattered across the terrain, while the notable Angel Falls represents the dramatic vertical relief of this portion of the Oxford and Franklin County border.
