Hunter Ranch and the surrounding high country of Malheur County define this remote landscape, where water management is central to the area's utility. The drainage of Bully Creek and its many tributaries, such as North Bully Creek and South Bully Creek, feed a series of small, vital upland pools including Big Flat Reservoir and Mailbox Canyon Reservoir. This network of springs and reservoirs supports the ranching tradition on the flats below Hunter Mountain and Bendire Mountain. The nomenclature of the terrain reflects a mix of functional and colorful local naming, from Schoolmarm Spring and Honeymoon Creek to the geological prominence of Steamboat Rock. These features are connected by primitive routes like Bully Creek Rd and Bendire Rd, which trace the natural contours of Willow Basin and Baker City Canyon.
