The San Diego and Arizona Eastern railway winds through the complex topography of the In-Ko-Pah Mountains and the Jacumba Mountains, tracing a route near the international border with California Baja California. This arid region, much of it protected by Anza Borrego Desert State Park, shows a landscape defined by steep canyons and sparse water sources like Dos Cabezas Spring and Sacatone Spring.

Settlement is concentrated along the transit corridor, where the town of Jacumba sits in the Jacumba Valley near a local Airport. Further east, the descent toward the desert floor is marked by significant mining activity, including the Little Randsburg Mine and Mica Gem Mine. A Stage Sta Historical Marker near Mountain Spring provides a rare nod to the earlier era of overland travel through these desert passes.
