Yosemite National Park and the Stanislaus National Forest converge in this high-elevation landscape of the Sierra Nevada, where the boundary between the Yosemite Wilderness and Emigrant Wilderness is defined by the watershed's granite divides. Central to this area is the expansive Kibbie Lake, fed by the waters of Kibbie Creek and sheltered by the prominent Kibbie Ridge. The terrain is a network of alpine basins holding numerous water bodies, including Hyatt Lake, Many Island Lake, and the remote Yellowhammer Lake.
