McLean Ridge dominates the northern interior of this Penobscot County landscape, standing as a high point between the complex drainage systems of the West Branch Umcolcus Stream and the Wadleigh Brook watershed. The terrain is defined by its extensive network of water bodies, ranging from the large expanse of LaPomkeag Lake in the north to the northern reaches of Grand Lake Seboeis near Pickerel Point in the south. These waters are connected by a maze of streams and "deadwaters," including Dead Brook Deadwater and Upper Deadwater, reflecting the slow-moving, marshy nature of the Maine North Woods.
