Fresno spreads into the southern reaches of this landscape, where the San Joaquin River defines the border between Madera and Fresno Counties. The river valley is a complex network of waterways and low-lying landforms, including Island Number One, Cobbs Island, and the eponymous Lanes Bridge crossing. To the north, the terrain transitions from the agricultural flats of the San Joaquin Valley toward the rising slopes of Little Table Mtn, which dominates the northeastern corner.
