The South Fork Eel River carves a winding path through the northern Mendocino highlands, anchoring a landscape where protected wilderness meets small redwood-country settlements. The community of Leggett sits at a critical junction of mountain roads and river bends, surrounded by low-lying pockets like Leggett Valley and Winkie Flat. To the south and east, the terrain rises into the Elkhorn Ridge Wilderness and South Fork Eel River Wilderness, where steep canyons are drained by numerous named tributaries including Big Dann Creek and Cedar Creek.
