Leon Peak stands as the high point of this high-altitude landscape within the Grand Mesa National Forest, straddling the border of Mesa and Delta counties. The 2013 survey of this section of the Grand Mesa reveals a complex network of water management and recreational infrastructure, including the Leon Tunnel and numerous high-country catchments like Dawson Reservoir and Leon Lake. This area was historically shaped by land management practices, evidenced by the Big Creek Leon Drift Fence, a landmark of the region's ranching heritage.
