Current River flows through the northeastern corner of this landscape, protected as part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverway. This portion of Shannon County is defined by a dense network of deeply carved valleys and family-named hollows, including Hieronymus Hollow, Howell Hollow, and McHenry Hollow. A particularly striking landform, The Sunkland, sits north of Burr Oak Basin, illustrating the unique karst-like subsidence patterns of the Ozark Plateau. To the west, the topography transitions into the drainage systems of Black Valley Cr and its northern and southern forks. Navigation through this complex terrain is provided by a grid of local roads like State Hwy K and numerous county routes that follow the ridgelines and valley floors, connecting remote clearings and providing access to the river corridor.
