The small border settlement of Lochiel marks the southwestern corner of this survey, positioned where the high desert meets the international boundary line. Stretching across the southern landscape, the San Rafael Valley provides a broad, open corridor flanked by the dissected terrain of the Coronado National Forest. This region is defined by its drainage systems and water sources, such as Sheehy Spring and the essential stock ponds of Arlene Tank, Huachuca Tank, and Kenny Tank, which supported the local ranching economy.
