Ouachita National Forest blankets the central portion of this Arkansas landscape, where the ridges of the South Fork Mountains divide the local waters. The northern reaches are defined by the S Fork Caddo River, while the Antoine River flows through the eastern corridor toward the southern edge near Kirby. Settlement patterns follow the winding creek valleys and gap passes, such as Brooks Gap and Dripping Springs Gap, which provide natural transit through the high terrain of Brushy Mtn and Wilson Mtn.
